Fit the end cap
Push a rubber end cap onto the bottom of the first tube.
Crosshole sonic logging tests the concrete inside a bored pile after it is cast. It finds voids, soil inclusions, honeycombing and necking within the reinforcement cage, and is more precise there than a sonic echo test from the pile head.
Steel access tubes are tied to the inside of the rebar cage for the full depth of the pile. Once the concrete is placed, the tubes are filled with water. The test engineer lowers an ultrasonic transmitter down one tube and a receiver down another, then pulls both up together.
Sound concrete carries the signal quickly from tube to tube. A defect slows it down or blocks it. Every pair of tubes is logged in turn, giving a profile of the whole pile that the engineer reviews on site and again in the office. The method is set out in ASTM D6760.
The project specification sets how many tubes each pile needs, usually based on the pile diameter.
Our sonic tubes are thin-walled black annealed steel with a bell mouth formed on one end. The plain end of the next tube pushes into the bell, where a rubber gasket seals the joint so grout and slurry can't get in and block the probe.
50 mm tubes are in stock at our Al Quoz warehouse. Other diameters are supplied to order.

Weights are calculated for plain steel tube and are a guide only. End caps, gaskets and steel discs are supplied to match.
Done by hand at the cage, before it is lifted into the bore.
Push a rubber end cap onto the bottom of the first tube.
Tie steel wire around the fixing ears and the cage bars to hold the tube in place.
Tie the next tube to the cage in line with the first, the same way.
Push the two tubes together until the push-fit mark reaches the bell mouth.
Line up the fixing ears either side of the joint and wire them tightly together.
Carry on until the tubes run the full length of the cage, then cap the top until testing.

We hold 50 mm x 1.0 mm x 5.8 m sonic pipe in our Al Quoz warehouse, with end caps and gaskets to match.
